If you’re glued to the Australian Open like we are, you’ll likely to be itching to hit a few balls for yourself. But just in case you possess the talent of a twig on the court, we have a handful of video games perfect for the occasion:
Top Spin 4 (PS3, 360)
Without question the best game of the bunch, Top Spin 4 has it all. A wide range of courts, plenty of popular players and gameplay that is so incredibly smooth and satisfying you’ll never want to put it down. Sure, it doesn’t look as pretty anymore and requires you to whip out your old consoles, but tennis hasn’t been better replicated than this.

Virtua Tennis 4 (PS3, 360, PC)
Where Top Spin set its sights on a more hardcore simulation, Virtua Tennis is all about arcade sensibilities, with outlandish shots aplenty and an absurd amount of dramatic dives. Better suited for casual players, it’s a shame this series has gone relatively dormant.

AO Tennis (PS4, XBO, PC)
One of only two series tennis simulators on modern consoles, AO Tennis has the benefit of being the only official video game based on our local Grand Slam tournament. When it launched, things were admittedly a little rough around the edges, but Aussie developer Big Ant Studios (https://www.bigant.com/) has worked hard to iron out many of the issues through numerous patches – the most recent of which landed just in time for the start of this year’s tournament.

Mario Tennis Aces (Switch)

One for the whole family, the Mario Tennis formula has won over Nintendo fans for years. Aces is the latest in series and provides a fun, very gamified twist of the typical tennis formula starring some Mushroom Kingdom favourites. As a result, power-ups and larger-than-life specials are commonplace, creating an experience that’s frantic, chaotic and whole lot of fun.

Tennis World Tour (PS4, XBO, Switch, PC)
Made by a few of the minds behind Top Spin 4, despite having some solid hype behind it, Tennis World Tour unfortunately wasn’t quite able to live up to that pedigree. That said, it’s your only way to control the likes of the mighty Roger Federer on the current generation of consoles.
