Head content programmer at HBO Max, Casey Bloys, gives an update on when fans can expect The Last of Us to premiere.
One of HBO’s most anticipated upcoming shows, The Last of Us, is based on the critically acclaimed 2013 Playstation game of the same name. While the series is still without a release date, the show is shaping up its cast with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey set to play Joel and Ellie respectively. Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s hit Chernobyl, will be developing the series with Neil Druckman, the creative lead on the video games the series is based on.
In an interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys talked about a variety of series and films coming to HBO Max and gives fans of The Last of Us series more information about when they can be expecting the show to premiere.
“It’s not going to air in 2022 — they are still shooting in Canada. I imagine you will see it in ’23,” HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys told Deadline.
Bloys continues to give his first impressions from what he’s seen from the show and to no one’s surprise, he’s excited. This is to be expected from someone in his position but still, it is good news for fans of the video game series who are looking to see the same storytelling magic recreated in live-action.
“I have seen some early episodes and I’m very excited,” Bloys said. “Craig did Chernobyl for us, he is a fantastic writer and director. What I’ve seen looks amazing, so I’m excited for it, but it will not be in ’22.”
While Bloys is excited, he also wants to temper fans’ expectations. There are certain series that become cultural landmarks in ways that can’t be recreated, they begin to live in their own untouchable realm. Maybe, if it’s lucky, The Last of Us will carve out a space like that for itself.

“There is no next Game of Thrones,” he said. “I’ve been here long enough that I’ve been through, what’s the next Sopranos, what’s next Game of Thrones, now what’s next Succession. There is no next Game of Thrones.”
