Rachel Corbett had an emotional goodbye on The Project last night, announcing her departure as she starts her maternity leave.

The mothertobe burst into tears as she thanked her cohosts and the audience for their support, before bidding a final farewell.

“I’ve sat at this desk every single week for the last six years,” Corbett said as a staffer delivered flowers to her at the end of the program.

“Oh my god, fuss. I hate fuss. Thank you though, that’s lovely,” she quipped.

“It’s so weird to be leaving, and also to have no idea who I’m going to be on the other side of this. Because it’s the biggest thing, and the weirdest thing that you can have no measure for.”

Co-host Sarah Harris clarified that Sunday night’s show wouldn’t be Corbett’s last. “It’s not your last ever show forever. You’ll be back in a few months. Just have time in the baby bubble and get your head around that,” sahe said.

Corbett replied, “But it’s a big thing, right? I mean it’s weird, I don’t even know – what if I’m miserable, what if I hate it, what if I’ve made a terrible mistake?”

As the tears began to flow, Corbetts cohosts comforted her and praised her for her contribution to the show. “You’re an amazing human. You’re going to be an incredible mum. But we do love you and we look forward to having you back, “Hamish Macdonald said.

He added, “And just on a personal note, I’m so amazed and in awe at you doing this on your own. You’re such an incredible human, you’re so frickin’ organised, and that’s going to go out the window – but anyway, we love you so much mate.”
