Disney is bringing the original design for Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie back and is calling him ‘Ugly Sonic.’

Disney is bringing back Chip ‘n Dale for a reboot on Disney Plus and made sure to include as many cameos as they could fit into the property, including one that might horrify fans— ‘Ugly Sonic.’ Calling him ‘Ugly Sonic’ isn’t just me being mean either, that is literally how he is billed in the movie’s cast listing. ‘Ugly Sonic’ is of course a reference to the original look Sonic had in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie that drew a massive amount of fan backlash.

The backlash that the original Sonic design received was so intense that Paramount Pictures decided to delay the movie and do a complete overhaul of Sonic’s visual effects. This led to Sonic being a surprise hit and went a long way to pave some goodwill with the fans. However, that old version of Sonic still exists, and now it’s being brought back for the upcoming Chip ‘n Dale movie.

Not only is the ‘Ugly Sonic’ coming back, but he will also be voiced by Tim Robinson, who is known for his hit comedy sketch show on Netflix I Think You Should Leave, known for its tense humour in which seemingly random situations become increasingly uncomfortable as the characters drill into what was previously thought an inconsequential point.

Some fans are reacting to the news on Twitter and their reactions are incredulous, to say the least.

“THEY PUTTING UGLY SONIC IN THE CHIP’N’ DALE MOVIE ???? EXCUSE ME ???”

Years later, the pain of that break still stings. Chip has burrowed deeper into his strait-laced, traditional outlook – yup, he’s still sporting a hand-drawn look, and now he’s an insurance salesman! – but Dale is still hoping for mega fame, spending his time fan conventions where he’s barely even a third-string talent. (Put it this way, he’s shilling autographs alongside other “stars” like, um, “Ugly Sonic.”)”

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is releasing this Friday, May 20th, 2022.
