The woman murdered in the tragic knife attack in Sydney yesterday has been identified.

24-year-old Michaela Dunn was allegedly murdered at an apartment on Clarence Street in the CBD. Dunn was a student at Notre Dame University.

On Wednesday, her family released the following statement to police.

“While her family appreciate the support offered by the community, they have requested their privacy at this difficult time,” the statement read.

Dunn’s mother described her as a “beautiful, loving woman who had studied at university and travelled widely.”

A 20-year-old from Marayong in Sydney’s west was arrested on Tuesday, after he was restrained in a citizens arrest after allegedly stabbing a 41-year-old woman at a hotel in the Sydney CBD.

Earlier today, an unnamed relative of the man behind the stabbing rampage spoke to reporters outside her family home, extending her heartfelt apologies to the victims.

“I don’t want to go near him,” she told The Guardian. “I feel shocked, angry, disgusted. I hate my last name.

“I just want to say sorry to the victim – she was younger than me. She could have been going out within a few hours, to go shopping with her mum, have dinner with her boyfriend. Now she can’t do that, can she?”

“All the words I’m going to say aren’t going to bring her back. I want to say I’m really sorry.”

Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Michaela during this awful time.

The man is expected to be charged with murder on Wednesday, after he was arrested on Tuesday afternoon.
