Now that we’re more than halfway through the year, many publishers have firmed up the release dates for their biggest hitters, granting us the opportunity to round up the six biggest video games that will help close out 2019. Keep pinching those pennies!

Gears 5 (XBO, PC)

Release date: September 10

The Xbox One hasn’t had a whole lot of exclusive action this year, but that all changes when Gears 5 blasts its way onto the system. You’ll take control of protagonist Kait Diaz as she attempts to simultaneously understand her family and the connection to her enemy.

But don’t worry, there’ll still be plenty of explosive setpieces and violent battles. There’s also three-player campaign co-op, the return of Horde mode and a brand new Escape mode in case you weren’t already sold.

Borderlands 3 (PS4, XBO, PC)

Release date: September 13

The looter shooter that helped popularise the genre is finally back! You’ll once again take control of an extraordinary vault hunter – this time attempting to put a stop to the fanatical Calypso Twins (your new baddie) from their dastardly ways. The series’ usual screwball humour, chaotic action and absolute bevy of guns is also set to remain intact.

Make no doubt about it, you’ll want to round up a few friends for this adventure.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare (PS4, XBO, PC)

Release date: October 25

Following a few less successful entries, the Call of Duty series returns to what helped it become a cultural phenomenon in the first place – Modern Warfare. Taking the same name as the 2007 classic, this fresh reboot will once again provide a single-player campaign that is “ripped from the headlines” and reintroduces popular characters like Captain Price.

There will also be a new co-op mode featuring a range of strategic missions to tackle with a friend and the usual suite of multiplayer modes bound to keep you hooked.

Death Stranding (PS4)

Release date: November 8

The PlayStation 4’s biggest hitter to close out 2019, Death Stranding has a lot going for it – especially its stellar line-up of talent including Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen. Then there’s the fact that it’s being crafted by beloved video game developer Hideo Kojima – the man behind the Metal Gear Solid.

The main question mark surrounding the game is what in the hell it’s actually about, because despite a number of lengthy trailers, the narrative still makes absolutely zero sense. Colour us intrigued though, because we’re expecting something special.

Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield (Switch)

Release date: November 15

Get ready to go Pokécrazy when both Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield make their way to the Switch. It’s the series’ first major outing on a mainline Nintendo console (not counting last year’s Let’s Go) so fans are excited for big things.

This time you’ll go gallivanting about the Galar region as you attempt to amass a loyal team of pocket monsters to help make you the very best – including the legendary Zacian and Zamazenta. A new Dynamaxing mechanic will also be introduced, leading to super-sized Pokémon battles.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS4, XBO, PC)

Release date: November 15

Brought to you by the team behind Titanfall and Apex Legends, Fallen Order has a good chance of becoming 2019’s biggest surprise hit. Early demos focused on more linear combat, but since then the developers have revealed there’s a little more than meets the eye.

Fights can often be a slower, more methodical affair in the vein of Dark Souls, and there’s a Metroidvania-style approach to exploration and upgrades for yourself and your ship. Fingers crossed that this is the Star Wars game you’ve been looking for.
