Marvel taps Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar music video director Jake Schreier to direct their upcoming film Thunderbolts.

Marvel has tapped Jake Schreier to direct their upcoming film Thunderbolts, which sounds like it will lean heavily into the same concept as The Suicide Squad with a team of anti-heroes completing missions at the behest of the government. Some of the characters that could potentially be starring or making some sort of appearance include Baron Zemo, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, The Abomination, US Agent, and Winter Soldier among others. Black Widow writer, Eric Pearson, is set to pen the script.

General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross will likely helm the team of unlikely heroes as he does so in the comics and the character has already been established in the MCU, appearing in several movies. The actor who portrayed Thunderbolt, William Hurt, has since passed away and it is unknown how Marvel intends to approach the situation.

Schreier first got his start directing classic Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar music videos and broke onto the scene with his 2013 Sundance standout Robot & Frank. He recently finished production on the A24 and Netflix series Beef and has also directed several episodes of Dave. He is repped by CAA and Grandview.

Marvel’s slate is filling up fast, with multiple projects already being released in 2022, and eight more still to come this year alone. Here are each of the upcoming projects for 2022:

July 8th, 2022 – Thor: Love and Thunder

The fourth solo outing for Chris Hemsworth and second outing for Director Taika Waititi sees Thor return to the futuristic 80’s mayhem of Ragnarok. However, this time Hemsworth is reunited with long lost love Jane as played by Natalie Portman. The duo will team up against Christian Bale as the sinister Gorr the God Butcher.

August 10th, 2022 – I Am Groot

Groot graces Disney+ in a series of shorts that are being kept under wraps for now. However, Gunn confirmed on Instagram that they wern’t cannon to the Guardians saga.

August 17th, 2022 – She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

Another first for the MCU, Tatiana Maslany makes her debut as She-Hulk who seems to have a much better grasp on her green alter ego then her fellow Hulk, Bruce Banner. Mark Ruffalo will also reprise his role as Bruce Banner alongside Tim Roth as Abomination who briefly appeared last year in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings after a long absence.

October 2022 – Marvel Halloween Special

The untitled one hour project will be a direct to Disney+ feature directed by Michael Giancchino, who is ironically best known for his composing on the latest trilogy of Spider-Man films and The Batman. The special has also cast Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donnelly in undisclosed roles.

2022 – What If? (Season 2)

Returning to Disney+ in 2022 is another deep dive into the vast animated multiverse that has been explored in latest Marvel outings. Presumably with the return of Jeffery Wright as the ominous Watcher, expect to see even more whacky alternate universes.

2022 – The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Another direct to Disney+ special sees the return of Chris Pratt and co as they seemingly parody the hilarious dumpster fire that is the Star Wars Holiday Special. Though not much is known at this time, Groot having Christmas lights stuck in his branches would not be a surprise.

2022 – Secret Invasion

Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos reunite alongside Emilia Clarke, Cobie Smulders, Olivia Coleman, Martin Freeman and Christopher McDonald. The series is set to adapt the much loved comic of the same name which sees Fury continue to deal with the Skrulls who have been invading the Earth… In secret (would you believe it??)

November 2022 – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

This film will continue to follow the characters set up in the previous film. Though it will be without Chadwick Boseman in the lead role, following his untimely passing. Rumours suggest that we will see the introduction of the Sub-mariner Namor. Namor is similar to that of Aquaman, but with more sinister goals.
