#Anniversary #Celebration #Technology #TimeFlies. Today, the humble hashtag turns ten, marking a decade since its creator (although this term seems wrong) Chris Messina first floated the idea as a way of easily categorising special interest groups on a then-new platform named Twitter.

Since then, the categorisation tool has morphed somewhat, enjoying a brief-but-annoying period when people would use it in real non-typed conversations, spawning a style of punchline-heavy rap music, and being used as an effective way to add a punchline or summarise a point, mood, or feeling. In short, like most language (and sorry, but this is a form of language) it is an ever-evolving thing.

Twitter are celebrating this anniversary with, what else, a special hashtag. From 2pm, Sydney-time (that’s right) if you use #hashtag10 in your tweets, you’ll get one of those custom emojis.

They also shared a few stats, the most notable is that 125 million hashtags are used on the platform #every #single #fucking #day.
