Today we’re going to break down the Star Wars moments that built up Darth Vader over time as one of the greatest villains in film history.
Darth Vader is a villain so iconic and recognizable that it’s hard to pick from the many moments throughout the character’s 45-year history. Picking only five out of hundreds of moments with the character is almost a disservice to the character’s vast iconography.
To make things a little easier, this list will only contain moments from Vader’s live-action appearances, leaving out the many appearances and incredible feats we’ve seen from the character in animation, comics, and video games.
Without further ado, let’s break down Vader’s most iconic and badass moments throughout film.
5. I find your lack of faith disturbing
While it was tough to choose between this scene from 1977’s A New Hope and the opening scene, which establishes both Vader’s ruthlessness as well as his iconic ‘The Imperial March’ theme, I would argue that this moment is a better establishing moment for the character. We get to see how Vader rules through crushing fear, even amongst heavyweights of the Imperial army; his devotion to the Force, and his iconic ‘Force choke’ method; and the dynamic between Vader and Tarkin, who is actually able to command Vader’s respect.
On top of all of that, we get some of the most iconic lines in Vader’s history, delivered by the outstanding voice of James Earl Jones.
4. Vader’s redemption
This scene from Return of the Jedi is the penultimate moment in Vader’s character arc, seeing his redemption and fulfillment of the prophecy told about him so long ago.

3. Duel of the apprentice and master on Mustafar
While this scene is in the brief moment of time before Vader has his suit, he is still technically Darth Vader. Coming directly after Vader’s slaughtering of the Jedi Temple, the younglings inside, and the choking of Padme, Vader’s beginnings see him performing some of his most brutal acts. The following lightsaber duel between him and his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi, is regarded by many as one of the best in Star Wars history.

2. Hallway massacre above Scarif
I don’t really need to say much for this scene from Rogue One. Just watch and you’ll understand.
1. No, I am your father
One of the most shocking character revelations in cinematic history, paired with one of the best and most visceral lightsaber fights makes for an easy pick at the number one spot. Some could say this specific moment forever cemented Star Wars as a franchise and is the very peak of all moments throughout any content in the Star Wars catalog. And it just so happens that Vader is in the very center of it with his son, Luke Skywalker.
I mean, c’mon, you all knew this was gonna be in the top spot.
Vader will return again in Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will see him cross sabers with his former master once more.
