If there’s one thing we can be clear on, it’s that irony is not America’s strong point. Let me get this straight – Americans are currently protesting lockdown regulations by gathering together in large groups? How does this make sense?
For starters, I’m actually American, myself, so don’t read this as if I’m just here to bash Americans. I’ve lived here in Australia for nearly five years, and it’s given me a different view point than most Americans have experienced.
So, it’s obvious that we’re in the middle of a global pandemic called COVID-19. If you don’t know this, then you’ve got to crawl out from whatever rock you’ve been living under. Practically, the entire world is in lockdown mode in order to flatten the curve, and decrease the spread of the virus.
So far in Australia, this era of social distancing is working. The state I reside in, Victoria, has seen a steady decrease of new cases for almost a fortnight, which notes that our social distancing measures are actually causing the virus to cease.
America has lockdown laws in place, too. My family tells me all about how restaurants and shops are mostly curb-side pick-up or delivery only, and that all social events over 10 people are disbanded. Yet, America is seeing an increase on new cases every day, still.
However, some U.S. residers are taking this to be an encroachment on their freedom, and to be honest, I’m finding these individuals to be none other than selfish, entitled Karens.
Happening in Michigan and Minnesota, hundreds took to creating traffic jams, and protesting outside of state buildings, demanding that stay-at-home orders should cease, and that life should go back to normal.
Let me restate that: hundreds of people decided to ignore the current stay-at-home orders by gathering in mass groups to protest having to stay at home.
Once again, for the people in the back: these people have decided to ignore lockdown orders that are intended to flatten the curve, and are still gathering (with potentially spreading the virus more), which will increase the length of time lockdown laws are necessary.
Huh? How ignorant can you be? Sure, the U.S. has been famous for its protests through the years, and sometimes they’ve seen success with it. And, yes, American’s have the right to free speech, but shouldn’t it be noted that sometimes their expression of this liberty is a bit ridiculous?
And, to add to the irony of it all, some of the protestors were actually donning masks, too, as the U.S. has been advised to wear masks if you’re outside of your house.
So, which one is it? Are we following the rules or not? I’m so confused. That’s just like asking for a supersized meal from McDonald’s, but asking for a diet soda because you’re ‘watching your weight’.
In all honesty, I cannot get my mind around all of this. Yes, it’s ingrained into the minds of many Americans to fight back when it comes to those who intend to limit your freedom, as we’ve seen in the American Revolution, but right now local governments are doing the best they can to keep this virus under control, and to ensure that our lockdowns are as temporary as they can be.
Now, I can’t speak for the federal government, or the combover sporting Cheeto fart that’s in office, but if your local mayor or governor has decided that it’s best for your city to adhere to stay-at-home regulations, then it’s in your best interest that you do. They aren’t doing this lightly, and are just as keen to see shops and restaurants open up once again, as well.
If you’re wondering why I haven’t said to follow the federal government in America, then you’ve gotta do some reading up on Mr. Orange Blob himself. In addition to initially believing that COVID-19 was a hoax put on by the democrats, he has decided that illegally inciting a revolution to be a good corse of action.
Yep, that’s right, ol’ dumpy Trump-y has decided to take to Twitter with a series of Tweets that have said “Liberate Minnesota” and “Liberate Michigan”, while including in a press briefing that their current lockdown laws were “too tough”.
In addition to this nonsense, one of Donald Trump’s advisors, Economist Stephen Moore has called these protesting Americans “the modern-day Rosa Parks.” Y’know, Rosa Parks protested not sitting in the back of the bus just because of her skin colour and race – a ridiculous social divider of the 1950s.
That’s a bit understandable to protest against. Protesting because you’ve gotta stay at home for a wee bit so you don’t potentially get infected by a disease that has killed over 150,000? That’s a bit pathetic, and if American’s continue on this path of deciding to pick and choose which laws they follow, they’ll certainly see current lockdown laws extended for quite some time.
