We’ve all done things that we regret, but a US woman’s decision to store her life savings in her fridge is arguably one of the biggest gaffes in recent history, after she lost the cash while exchanging it with Costco.
Now, that’s quite a lot to take in, so let’s take a closer look at this incident. As Denver7 reports, Colorado woman Renee Reese had made a habit of storing her cold hard cash in a cold hard location, her freezer.
“I had it in the freezer because if the house burned down, the freezer stuff doesn’t burn,” explained Reese of her odd hiding spot, noting her multiple sclerosis made trips to the bank difficult.
“It was a safe place to put it in case there was a fire. Because I had no need to get in it for any reason other than to deposit it.”
However, her troubles first began back in June when contractors from Costco came to exchange her freezer for a new one. When the contractors arrived sooner than anticipated, Reese was forced to hurriedly clean out her freezer, overlooking her cache of cash which was stored in a Ziploc bag and wrapped with towels.
“I thought my daughter had grabbed it, she thought I had grabbed it, then when I went to look for it to put it back, it wasn’t there,”Renee Reese said.
Following an exhaustive search, local police were notified, as were Costco, who tracked down the old freezer, but discovered that the cash was not inside.
Likewise, the company responsible for moving the freezer have been unable to locate the money, leading to Reese hitting back at Costco’s lack of background checks for employees and sub-contractors. “Who’s checking these people? What if they’re rapists or pedophiles?” she questioned.
“I mean, nobody knows anything and you can’t talk to them, at least through the experience I’ve had.”
“The financial strain has devastated me and because I’m so sick I don’t have any way to recover it,” Reese explained of her loss.
So if you happen to know anyone in the US who’s inexplicably richer by $35k, now might be the time to raise your suspicions.
