Let’s go lesbians, let’s go! In a viral clip from the new Scooby-Doo movie, Velma was officially confirmed to be gay.

Say what you want, LGBT folks stay winning. If you’re one of those people who just knew that Velma from Scooby-Doo was batting for her own team all this time, your time to gloat has come.

We now have official confirmation that the woman, the legend, the icon Velma Dinkley is a lesbian.

In a viral clip from the new Scooby-Doo movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! Velma meets the designer Coco Diablo and, well, essentially forgets how to act. She’s crushing hard on Coco, and we’re celebrating the confirmation that she is part of the LGBTQ community.

The news is being welcomed by longtime fans of the series, who have speculated about Velma’s sexuality for years. In fact, that Velma is gay was largely accepted, although officially unconfirmed – until now, that is.

Even creators who assumed control of the franchise briefly tried to work an official confirmation of her sexuality into their work, only to be shut down by the studios.

In 2020, James Gunn, who worked on the live-action films, confirmed on Twitter that he’d made Velma ‘explicitly gay’ in his initial drafts, but ‘the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).’

Not just Gunn, but Tony Cervone – who was a supervising producer on Mystery Incorporated – was also aboard the LGBT Velma train.

In 2020, Cervone took to Instagram to share: “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.”

Cervone went on to say that while they couldn’t work it into the series officially, they left clues implying Velma’s attraction to women.

“There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.” he wrote.
