The state has recorded 22,429 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths as Victoria begins the rollout of a massive rapid antigen test boost.

Millions of rapid antigen tests are due to roll out in Victoria as COVID case numbers continue to skyrocket.

The state recorded 22,429 new cases today with six unfortunate deaths.

Around 3 million RATs are due to arrive today from the state’s bulk order of 44 million for those who are in need.

“Thanks to our bulk order of tests, Victorians will soon be able to reliably obtain a free RAT,” Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced.

“As more tests progressively arrive, we’ll continue to roll them out to those who need them.”

Workers in sensitive settings and essential workforces will be prioritised to receive a rapid antigen test first as part of the rollout. This will include essential workers in the health care system, emergency services, and disability and aged care services.

Victorians who have pre-existing conditions that may make them more susceptible to harsher COVID-19 symptoms will also be prioritised, with the aim to get them diagnosed quicker to help mitigate the symptoms and provide care as quickly as possible.

Last week, over 400,000 rapid antigen tests were distributed to over 60 PCR testing sites statewide.

Since the rapid antigen test reporting system was introduced on January 7, 145,580 have reported a positive RAT result either via the coronavirus website or via phone.

Victoria on Monday recorded 1,229 hospitalisations, passing the grim milestone of over 1,000 hospitalisations on Saturday, though experts say that we will soon overcome our peak.

Officials reported that 129 people were currently in intensive care, with 38 on a ventilator.

According to DHHS figures, 24% of Victorians aged over 18 have received their booster dose of the vaccination.

Premier Andrews continues to urge Victorians to get their third dose as soon as they are eligible.

“If there’s one thing you do today or tomorrow, if you’re eligible for a booster please go online and book an appointment,” he said. “It is key to us driving down these case numbers.”
