Disney Plus’ newest venture, Percy Jackson and The Olympians, has found its titular character in Walker Scobell.
The Adam Project star Walker Scobell is headed for Disney Plus fame. As reported by Variety, the actor – who recently made waves in the Ryan Reynolds starrer – has been cast as Percy Jackson in the latest adaptation of the Rick Riordan series.
Riordan, who is executive producing the series and also writing the pilot for the show along with Jon Steinberg, raved about Scobell on his website.
“Walker Scobell is an incredibly talented young man who blew us away with his audition tapes for the role of Percy. Many of you recently discovered how great Walker is when you watched his movie The Adam Project, in which Walker lit up the screen as a younger version of Ryan Reynolds’ character.” he said.
“We were fortunate enough to audition Walker months before that movie came out, but the film only confirmed what we already knew about his talent. It was obvious to me and the rest of the team that Walker had the perfect mix of comedic timing, sweetness, rebelliousness, snark and heroism to embody our hero Percy Jackson.” the author continued.
Percy Jackson and The Olympians will be the second time we see the character come to life. In 2010 and 2013, Fox delivered two movies around the adventures of the character, who discovers he is a demi-god and the son of the Greek God Poseidon. The movies, however, failed to make any significant impact.
A series adaptation of eight episodes was commissioned in 2020, as confirmed by Riordan, but things did not get official until this year. Unlike the movies, the show plans to be more faithful to the characters and the story line, showing a much younger (and book-faithful) version of 12-year-old Percy.
