Fasten your seatbelt because the most Nicolas Cage movie ever is on the way in the form of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

There’s a lot to unpack with this meta creation. Cage stars as a fictionalised version of himself, who’s offered $1 million to attend the birthday part of his biggest fan, Javi.

It then transpires that Javi is a drug lord being investigated by the CIA, and poor Cage soon finds himself working as an undercover operative. He’s then “forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones.”

Wow. I wish I was in the writer’s room when they dreamed this concept up. Cage has been growing more and more unhinged in his work recently – see Mandy and Pig – but this movie should allow him to really fly off the handle.

You’ve also got to admire when a star becomes so big that they can do whatever they want. Like Woody Allen making his bourgeois existential crisis movies almost every year, or Robert de Niro almost ruining his legacy with a monstrosity like Dirty Grandpa, it’s amazing when someone reaches this sort of level. Let Cage play himself in every movie from now on is what I’m advocating for.

This is the other thing though: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent actually seems like it could be good? The trailer features Neil Patrick Harris and Pedro Pascal as Javi, while Tiffany Haddish and Sharon Horgan also fill the surprisingly strong cast. It’s co-written by Kevin Etten, whose credits include Scrubs, Desperate Housewives, and Workaholics.

There’s not to long to wait to find out, with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent scheduled for release on April 22nd, 2022.
