Yes, this is a piece of royal coverage.

No, we’re not about to mercilessly slag off the controversy of the last week as ‘Megxit’, or write any other bullshit that blames one individual for the decision of a couple to change their circumstance.

Rather, for this ‘hot take’ we’ve chosen to look at a different source to those picked up by your usual blogs and tabloids – Prince Harry himself, who last night referred to his and wife Meghan Markle’s decision to step down from royal duties as a “leap of faith.”

Speaking at a dinner for his own charity Sentebale, aimed at supporting children affected by the HIV virus, Harry noted that “Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the Commonwealth, and my military associations without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible.

Going to lengths to point out that he was speaking “not as a prince, or a duke, but as Harry,” he told the audience he had found the “love and happiness I had hoped for all my life” with Meghan.

“I know that you’ve come to know me well enough over all these years to trust that the woman I chose as my wife upholds the same values as I do. And she does,” he said.

“I will continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities and military communities that are so important to me.” Watch the speech below.

The highly publicised exit from royal duties by the couple seems to lend weight to the idea that being born into the royal family, despite the privilege that no doubt comes along with it, can be a suffocating way to live.

Harry is expected to fly out to Canada to join Meghan and their son Archie – a normal move for most people, but one that you’ll no doubt see many hit pieces about over the next few weeks. Oh, to be (ex) royal.

Here’s the take from Markle’s estranged father, desperate to make the most of his famous connections
