It’s been 12 months since The Brag Media partnered with Young Henrys to help support local journalists through its ‘Shout the Writer a Beer’ feature.

Announced last September, the media publisher and one of Sydney’s most formative local craft breweries re-branded its reader-requested cross-platform ‘Shout The Writer a Coffee’ feature in order to give its fans the opportunity to tip or donate directly to their favourite writers.

Rebranding as ‘Shout the Writer a Beer’, Young Henrys and and The Brag Media announced they would commission the writer who received the most donations to write a long-form piece of their choice.

Today, The Brag Media and Young Henrys have announced Lars Brandle has been commissioned for a piece of his choosing. Brandle says readers can expect a long-form piece on how Australia has become an incubator for future NBA stars.

The piece will explore how American talent scouts now recognise the Australian basketball league as one of the best in the world, and how this country has become both an incubator for future NBA stars and a legitimate route back into civilian life for U.S.-based Aussie NBA stars who want to return home.

Lars Brandle will be paid $3,000 for the one piece, and the article will be published on The Brag.

“It’s great to be read, even better to be appreciated,” said Lars Brandle. “Writing can be a lonely game, where the brickbats fly as often as the bouquets. So, thanks for the support.

“In my way of giving back, I’ll flesh out a feature on my one of my lifelong passions, basketball. And how, thanks to a breakthrough Olympic medal, combined with a strong domestic league and a wave of Aussies making an impact in the NBA, the game here has reached a new heights,” Brandle added.

Many online media publishers bolster their businesses via paywalls and subscription models, this initiative allows readers to support its writers directly.

Young Henrys has continued to support the arts industry throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In July, the beer-makers staged a new instalment of their live music series, Best Served Loud. Then in August they gave away a Gretsch electric guitar in celebration of their collaboration with Rolling Stone Australia. The brewery has always been a staunch ally of the music industry.

The ‘Shout The Writer a Beer’ feature continues as The Brag Media hopes to further strengthen the bond between its fans and its writers. If a reader is particularly moved by a certain article, or would just like to further support the writer they can shout them a beer using The Brag Media’s micropayment system attached to each article.

As always, readers can choose how much they’d like to donate and even leave a personalised ‘thank you’ note for the writer.
