Y Waste is a new Australian app is hoping to make a difference in food waste, as well as affordable food accessibility across Australia. Available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide, the app can help you score super cheap deals on leftover food from your favourite spots at the end of the day.
As Concrete Playground points out, Australian retailers are throwing out three million tonnes of food every year, most of it because it hasn’t been sold. Y Waste is the newest venture looking to cut that massive number down whilst also hoping to provide for those experiencing food insecurity.

How does it work?
Working with restaurants, bakeries, and cafés, they provide you with the opportunity to purchase the surplus of food leftover from these providers at massively discounted rates. All you have to do is go to the place at the designated time and pick up your leftovers!
It’s basically a lucky dip for what you get – it could be anything off the menu that was left over. But when you can get a pie from Sydney’s Pie Tin for just $2.90, whatever it is it’s going to be worth saving nearly $6.

Their website also outlines how venders can donate food to those in need through the app. You can also see a live updater of how many meals have been donated, and saved from the trash heap so far.
When 35% of food stock purchased by retailers is thrown out because it’s not used, this is a pretty great way to cut that statistic way down. It’s also a fun and exciting way to get a bit experimental with your food.
