Wouldn’t it be incredible to view the majesty and terror of the sea through the eyes of one of its creatures? Thanks to a new Netflix documentary, you now can.

The streaming platform’s first Australian Original doc, Puff: Wonders of the Reef, arrives this week and it sounds awe-inspiring. The hour-long piece was filmed in Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef and is narrated by Australia’s own Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Neighbors).

It follows a humble baby pufferfish as it embarks on an aquatic odyssey, travelling through the amazing micro-world as it searches for a home on the Great Barrier Reef.

“For the first time, scientists, cinematographers and documentary filmmakers have combined their skills to transport us into Puff’s tiny world – a world where drama unfolds on scales too fast, too slow, or too small for the human eye to perceive,” the official synopsis reads.

“Year to date in 2021, Screen Queensland supported a total of 37 films, series and games, generating almost $300 million in production expenditure and 3,750 Queensland jobs,” Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich said.

“Screen Queensland is proud to support Queensland producers like BioQuest Studios, who film locally and engage our skilled and experienced workforce to create high-end productions right here at home for export to audiences worldwide.”

Puff came together through the work of local production company BioQuest Studios, who developed a super-macro camera technique that expertly captured the underwater world closer than ever before.

The studios’ cinematographer Pete West shared his pride at the project. “Puff: Wonders of the Reef has given us an opportunity to showcase just a small part of the incredible biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef,” he explained.

“We used cinematic techniques and macro motion control equipment developed especially for the film and for our work with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (Townsville) and other Queensland marine research centres.”

Puff: Wonders of the Reef is available to stream worldwide from today, December 16th. So put aside Squid Game and Tiger King 2 for a change, and let nature provide the entertainment.
