Ed Sheeran might have overtaken Eminem’s record of twelve weeks on top ofthe charts this week, but with the Englishman looking poised to break the record for most consecutive weeks at number one,Aussies are yet again doing their best to knock him from the top.
This week’ssingles charts see Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape Of You’ hitting the chart peakfor its thirteenth consecutive week. If Sheeran is able to last one more week at this position, he will have overtaken the current record holder for most weeks on top, which is currently Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’, released back in 1995. This chart milestone has also given the top two a shake up, with The Chainsmokers and Coldplay’s ‘Something Just Like This’ collaboration being relegated to number three, while Sheeran’s ‘Galway Girl’ sneaks into number two from number nine last week.
The rest of the top ten sees little difference from last week, with the exception of Kendrick Lamar’s ‘HUMBLE.’ seeing its chart debut with a number six position. Meanwhile, Drake’s ‘Passionfruit’ drops down one spot to number five, Bruno Mars’ ‘That’s What I Like’ drops from number five to seven, Lorde’s ‘Green Light’ dropsone spot to number eight, and Ed Sheeran rounds out the top ten with ‘Castle On The Hill’.
Our Aussies are yet again seeing comparatively low representation in the charts, with Ryan Riback’s remix of Starley’s ‘Call On Me’ being our highest placeholder, at #25. Pnau’s ‘Chameleon’ follows closely at #27, while Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’ sits at #30. Sia features though her collaboration with Pink and Stargate on ‘Waterfall’ at #40, Sheppard’s ‘Keep Me Crazy’ falls down from #37 to #48. Meanwhile, Bliss N Eso’s ‘Moments’, and Dean Lewis’ ‘Waves’ both debut in the charts, appearing at #41 and #50, respectively.
On the albums charts though, the Sheeran domination continues, as÷ (Divide)makes its fifth week at number one, while Sheeran’s previous albumX, re-enters the top ten at number nine. TheMoanasoundtrack takes out the second position this week, while our predictions of Mastodon and Jamiroquai shaking up the chats somewhat comes true, with Mastodon’sEmperor Of Sandat number three, and Jamiroquai’sAutomatonat number seven.
Our first Aussie entry in the list comes by way of Lee Kernaghan’sThe 25th Anniversary Album, charting at number ten, after peaking at the second position last week. Meanwhile Noiseworks’ Jon Stevens, and Polish Club both see debuts this week, with Stevens’Starlightat #16, while Polish Club’sAlright Alreadyseeing an entry at #19. Northlane, Keith Urban, and The Waifs all see entries soon after, while boththe Hilltop Hoods and Flume see re-entries into the charts, with the Hoods’Drinking From The Sun, Walking Under Stars Restrungranking at #37, and Flume’sSkinrounding out the charts at #50.
While Aussies see a fair showing in the albums charts, they’re sadly scarce in the singles charts, so the question now remains, how long until we see them dominate both, and will Ed Sheeran overtake Coolio’s record next week? Only time will tell for both of these questions.
