2021 is finally here and with it comes a whole stack of new movies for us cinephiles to feast our eyes on.
After many delayed releases due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it seems we can finally look forward to hitting the cinema again to check out these films.
Get ready to pass the popcorn, because here are seven of the most anticipated movies of 2021:
Dune – October 2021
Undoubtedly one of the most hotly-anticipated releases of the year, Dune was originally set to premiere in 2020 before COVID-19 forced its delay. Starring my imaginary boyfriend Timothée Chalamet, as well as the likes of Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin and Dave Bautista, it’s the first half of a two-part adaptation of the science-fiction epic novel.
The Matrix 4 – December 2021
To say The Matrix 4 has been a long time coming would be an understatement, given the third film in the iconic franchise was released some 15 years ago. While the creators behind the movie are still keeping details of the plot under wraps, we do know that Keanu Reeves and Jada Pinkett Smith are among the cast members reprising their roles.
Top Gun: Maverick – July 2021
Despite the original Top Gun‘s status as a classic film, we can’t say we expected it would receive a sequel some 34 years after its release. Nevertheless, Tom Cruise is set to reprise his role and will be joined by franchise newcomers including Jon Hamm and Miles Teller. It seems Cruise can’t get enough of reboots, as the next Mission Impossible flick is also set for release this year.
In The Heights – TBA
After the runaway success of Hamilton‘s release on Disney+ last year, it’s safe to say anticipation has never been higher for another Lin-Manuel Miranda musical. Based on the original Broadway production from 2007, In The Heights follows a New York bodega owner who inherits a fortune from his late grandmother.

Black Widow – May 2021
Easily one of the most anticipated movies to have come out of the MCU in some time, Black Widow will follow Scarlett Johansson as the titular character as she navigates survival following the events of Captain America: Civil War. Along with Johansson, Golden Globe nominee Florence Pugh will be making her Marvel movie debut as a sister figure to Black Widow.
Don’t Worry Darling – TBA
Another upcoming movie featuring rising star Florence Pugh, Don’t Worry Darling is said to be a psychological horror that focuses on a cult-like organisation during the 1950s. Of course, we would be remiss not to mention that the film also stars Harry Styles, who is currently rumoured to be dating its director and writer, Booksmart‘s Olivia Wilde.
Morbius – October 2021
Jared Leto will make his MCU debut as Dr Michael Morbius, the comic book scientist who attempts to cure himself of a rare blood disease. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t go entirely to plan, and he ends up transforming himself into a super-powered vampire (just casually).
