German Burger King is using the release of It: Chapter Two to smear the name of their arch-nemesis, Ronald McDonald.

In a batshit new campaign, Burger King are attempting to sway customers from McDonald’s by tapping into their coulrophobia. The new campaign sends geo-targeted messages to unsuspecting smartphone users visiting McDonald’s restaurants. The messages encourage the customers to scan an ad in a McDonald’s house magazine that registers them for the MyBK app. The app will then curse them with the ominous message, ‘Avoid the clown.’ Customers are then advised to run, not walk, to the closest Burger King — where they’ll be able to purchase a Whopper for one measly cent.

It’s a little genius, and a whole lot psychopathic. If I’m trying to shovel a serving of steaming hot chippies that are saltier than the baltic in my gob, the last thing I want to be confronted with is the fear that John Wayne Gacy is a looming presence. We’re not trying to recreate the 2016 clown sightings saga.

You can watch the campaign trailer video below.
