Asymmetrical horror game Dead By Daylight is getting a new chapter based on the Japanese horror film Ringu.

The basic premise of Dead By Daylight is that one player takes on the role of a horrific killer while the other 4 players try to not be caught and sacrificed to the ominous force called the Entity.

Many chapters based on horror film legends have already been included in the game and have been very successful. Their other adaptations include Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, Evil Dead, Saw, Silent Hill and Hellraiser.

In March 2022, Sadako Yamamura from Ringu will be crawling out of your tv screens and joining the other cult classics.

Ringu is a Japanese horror film from 1998 which rocked the world. In the film, a mysterious videotape circulates, killing anyone who watches it in 7 days. Does that sound familiar?

That’s because the concept was made even more famous by its American adaptation The Ring featuring Australia’s Naomi Watts and its sequels The Ring Two and Rings. It was also famously parodied in love-it-or-hate-it comedy Scary Movie 3.

Regarding the significance of this addition, game director Mathieu Côté had this to say: “The importance of the Ringu franchise in Japan, and its influence on culture around the world are undeniable. To be given the opportunity to dive into that legendary story as we bring this creation into Dead by Daylight is an immense honour. This new chapter will give our players something intensely dark and troubling, a real heart-pounding experience that adds to the already high intensity of our game”

Though it’s unclear as to how Sadako will operate in the game, I think it’s fair to say killer videotapes will almost definitely be involved.
