The second trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has debuted during the Super Bowl and stop the presses, is that the one and only Sir Patrick Stewart in the clip?

In the upcoming film, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Doctor Strange, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, must traverse the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Footage for the new film initially featured in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with a teaser trailer following late last year.

Now a second trailer has dropped and it’s even more intriguing than the first one. Halfway through the trailer, a shadowy figure mutters to an imprisoned Strange, “we should tell him the truth,” and it sounds a lot like Professor Charles Xavier.

While a lot of fans are immediately hopeful that it’s the X-Men legend, it would be one of the biggest shocks in MCU history. Despite having lengthy conversations with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige about the possibility of bringing Xavier to new films, Sir Patrick Stewart said that the success of Logan had put him off.

“(Hugh Jackman and I) were moved by the story… we also both made the decision that we were saying goodbye to our characters,” he explained. A lot can change in a year, though, and it sure does sound like Xavier in the new trailer. And the multiverse narrative device allows for such massive cameos to take place.

Elsewhere in the trailer, a new foe for Scarlet Witch is teased. Could it be Monica Rambeau? America Chavez? The safe bet, it seems, is Maria Rambeau as a Captain Marvel variant.

The upcoming film follows the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the first season of Loki, and WandaVision. Benedict Cumberbatch and Wanda’s Elizabeth Olsen are backed up by a strong cast, including Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo.

And the fact that Sam Raimi, the iconic director of the first Spider-Man trilogy, is helming the movie promises much. It’s incredibly his first movie in nine years, since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful (the less said about that, the better). He replaced the original director Scott Derrickson, who stepped down from the project due to creative differences. Loki writers Michael Waldron and Jade Halley Bartlett are penning the new Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to arrive in Australian cinemas on May 5th, 2022.
