Over the last few weeks, COVID-19 cases have begun to skyrocket with the omicron variant, but that doesn’t seem to stop people from flocking to the cinemas to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The newest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has been breaking box office records since its release in mid-December, but now it has just surpassed what was for years the highest grossing movie in history (not accounting for inflation).

Per DeadlineNo Way Home grossed an extra $33 million this week, bringing its total domestic gross to $668 million. This puts it now ahead of Titanic, the James Cameron classic that grossed $659.3 million. It was the biggest money maker in film history until Cameron unseated himself 12 years later with Avatar.

Given that Spider-Man: No Way Home is still going strong, there is only a matter of time before it beats another film star Tom Holland stars in — Avengers: Infinity War, since it’s now only $10 million away from surpassing it domestically.

Something to keep in mind however, is that these numbers both do not count for inflation and only account for the domestic box office. What Titanic grossed back then can be adjusted to about $1 billion today. Titanic also grossed $2.2 billion globally, which is $3.8 billion adjusted for inflation.

Similarly, Infinity War grossed $2 billion internationally, and with No Way Home hitting $1.5 billion, the new Marvel movie still has a ways to go.

In a worldwide pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home however exceeded everyone’s expectations, becoming the first film since the pandemic began to gross $1 billion globally.

Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland), MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) as their lives fall into chaos as Parker’s identity as Spider-Man is revealed and a multiverse featuring familiar faces from alternate timelines is unleashed.

Following this star-studded cast is Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Benedict Wong as Wong. The film also features a number of returning baddies from previous Spider-Man adventures, such as Willem Defoe as the Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock.
