Are you still playing your video games on a television like some sort of boomer? Get with the future, and play Doom on a Myki reader like this chap did.
People are getting all sorts of creative during quarantine. We’ve seen an immense amount of banana bread being baked, people have pitched their detective skills on figuring out the plot of Tiger King, and now we’ve got this legend using a Myki reader as a platform for playing the classic ’90s game Doom.
Recently posted to the Melbourne subreddit, one user, zbios, decided to show how he’s utilised his time in iso – running Windows via a Myki machine, and playing Doom on it.
Even though it’s unknown how in the world zbios managed to get ahold of a Myki ticket validator from the trams, trains, and busses of Melbourne, he did detail how he was able to get the video game up and running on the screen.
“So I have this old ticket validator that runs Windows CE. Since there Is a Windows CE version of Chocolate Doom (Doom source port), I was able to simply extract the CAB file, rename the contents and copy it directly to the machine via its compact flash port. I am controlling the game via VNC since there are no USB ports on the validator.”
Because we’re also all super computer literate, and I’m going to pretend like I entirely understood that, it basically means that somehow he was able to get it running so he could play it just like it was on the telly.
This isn’t the first time the old video game has been featured on strange consoles – in fact, there’s an entire subreddit devoted to finding strange and unusual devices to run the game, including calculators, ATMs, and fridges.
