Last year it was reported that Queensland was looking to put emojis on their license plates, and now it looks like the United States are following suit. Pretty soon, we’ll all be rolling around with the eggplant emoji firmly placed on the backs of our 2012 Ford Lasers. Emoji license plates for all.

A new piece of legislation before the Virginia House of Delegates will now allow drivers to add one of six emoji to their license plate. The bill was introduced by Rep. Rebecca White, a Democrat from Windsor, Vermont.

According to the text within the bill, people could add the emoji to the plate next to the number assigned by the Department of Motor Vehicles or they can make it one of the numbers assigned as a vanity plate. Here’s hoping they come to NSW soon.

The bill states that people will have the option to choose one out of six emojis. The emojis have yet to be specified but Queensland has the options of the smiling, laughing, winking, “love” or sunglasses emoji. The cost per plate here in Australia is roughly $336. Vanity plates in the United States range in price from $10-$100. They also have renewal fees of up to $80 but no price is stated yet.

Check out what the hot Australian emoji license plates look like at the moment:

Royal Automobile Club of Queensland spokesperson Rebecca Michael said the change would be no different from people adding their favourite sports team logo to their plates.

“For quite some time we’ve seen that you can support your favourite team or your favourite town with a symbol on your number plate,” Michael said. “And using an emoji is no different.”

Similar to the way things work in Australia right now, the American system will probably restrict drivers to a select few family-friendly emojis. So no, your dreams of the peach emoji plastered on your motor vehicle will not come true anytime soon.
