Late last year, Sydney was ranked a paltry 51st in the world when it comes to public transport, which caused Lord Mayor Clover Moore to remark: “People packed into trains like sardines, bus queues around the block – you don’t have to look far to see that our city is indeed lacking truly integrated and sustainable transport.”

As usual, she was bang on point, but hopefully there will be some relief for commuters with today’s news that Sydney will receive thousands of extra services, as part of a huge $1.5 billion statewide blitz on the broken bus transport system.

Transport minister Andrew Constance announced this morning that “as well as delivering thousands of extra services we are also purchasing more than 30 new buses and over 400 replacement buses this year, with around 20 of these new buses to cater for the increased demand in school services.”

Next, the trains please.
