George R.R. Martin recently released a blog post on his site where he revealed that the newest book, The Winds of Winter, could possibly be the longest in the Game of Thrones series.
Martin also gave some updates on the new House of Dragons series, saying he has watched a few more episodes and is “just as pleased as I was with the earlier episodes”.
“Those of you who like complex, conflicted, grey characters (as I do) will like this series, I think. There will be plenty of dragons and battles, to be sure, but the spine of the story is the human conflicts, the love and the hate, character drama rather than the action/adventure.”
House of Dragons is set 200 years before the events that made up Game of Thrones and follows the House Targaryen as they become involved in a bitter civil war, known as the ‘Dance of the Dragons’. It’s based on another of George R.R. Martin’s books, 2018’s Fire & Blood.
“Gods, kings, fire and blood. Dreams didn’t make us kings – dragons did,” spits Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen in the trailer’s voiceover, promising a lot more dragons than GoT at the very least.
And fear not, the infamous D&D (no, not the Wizards of the Coast game) will not be running House of Dragons, instead will be Ryan J. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, whom George R.R. Martin says “are doing great work”.
The two largest books in the Game of Thrones series are currently A Storm of Swords and A Dance With Dragons. Currently, George R.R. Martin has said that with the way The Winds of Winter is going, it might be longer than those two books. “I do usually cut and trim once I finish, but I need to finish first.”
