The people of the internet are convinced new Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon is little more than a poorly disguised “live-action Shrek”.

The first season of the show has already wrapped, and – spoiler alert – there are common themes, plot lines, characters, colours and scenes shared between the House of the Dragon and Shrek‘s swamp.

Of course, House of the Dragon and 2001 DreamWorks Animation film Shrek both play out in a medieval setting, so naturally there will be knights, dragons, kings, queens, princesses and castles in both.

But fans started pitching scenes from both franchises side-by-side, and several key scenes, including King Viserys on his deathbed, Aemond claiming his dragon Vhagar, Rhaenyra flying through King’s Landing on Syrax, Rhaenys interrupting Aegon’s coronation, and Alicent’s green dress reveal all have a strangely accurate parallel in the Shrek films.

In one TikTok video, someone re-created Princess Fiona’s iconic green dress outfit using Alicent Hightower’s green dress, proving just how similar the two outfits appear.

They also photoshopped Rhys Ifans’ character Otto Hightower, turning him into a slightly older (and hairier) Rumplestiltskin.

Geek Bomb founder and entertainment reporter Maude Garrett shared her reaction to one of the comparison videos on Instagram, under the caption, “I’m both mad and impressed.”

“They say there’s no original idea anymore, but had no idea that #Shrek was such an inspiration…” she wrote.

The video even prompted a “Wow. Just… wow,” from Rove McManus.

It remains to be seen whether the second season of House of the Dragon will continue with the bizarre coincidences – after all there are six Shrek movies to pull inspiration from – but we do know it won’t be coming any time soon.

“Don’t expect it in 2023,” said HBO chief Casey Bloys. “But I think sometime in 2024… We’re just starting to put the plan together, and just like last time, there are so many unknowns. It’s not to be coy or secretive, but you don’t want to say it’s going to be ready on this date, and then you have to move it.”
