Johnny Depp recently spoke on cancel culture during a press conference before the Donostia Awards reception at the San Sebastian Film Festival, as reported by Variety.

Depp was there obviously to speak on work-related topics, however a journalist at the conference decided to address the elephant in the room and ask the actor about cancel culture.

He was asked about his thoughts on social media and how it can affect celebrities and public figures.

Depp began by saying that it has been a “complex situation” because it has been “an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture or this instant rush to judgement based on essentially what amounts to polluted air that is… exhaled.”

When asked if he feels safe in a world dominated by social media and online connectivity, Depp’s response was seemingly a little disjointed.

He began by saying, “Yeah, I do,” however he then went onto say that things are “so far out of hand” and that “no one is safe”.

“It’s so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you.” Depp said.

“Not one of you…” he continued. “As long as someone is willing to say one sentence. It takes just one sentence and there is no more ground. The carpet has been pulled.”

Depp also reminded everyone in the room that he’s not the first or last person to feel the brunt of cancel culture.

“It’s happened to a lot of people. This type of thing has happened to women, men and children who have suffered from various types of unpleasantries and they sadly, at a certain point, begin to think that it’s normal.”

“I believe that if you are armed with the truth, then that’s all you need. It doesn’t matter if a judgement… has taken some artistic license.”
