Neville Longbottom, portrayed by Matthew Lewis, had inarguably one of the best character progressions in the Harry Potter films.

And recently he had the chance to reflect a little bit on that era of his life.

Throwing it back to those OG movies, Neville was always a faithful friend to Harry Potter and devoted Gryffindor house member.

He started off as a shy, introverted boy who was nothing if not reluctant to help Harry and the gang on their quests.

Think the time we stood up to the trio and told them that he’d fight them while he’s in his pyjamas with his fists up.

Fast forward to the latter movies and Neville becomes nothing if not a courageous bad ass.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Lewis talks about his new work as well sharing his feelings towards his role in the Harry Potter films.

As per The Times, Lewis stated that he struggles with roles that are too similar to his own life.

Lewis said, “I find it quite difficult when too much of me starts to come through in a character. It’s easier when I can play someone completely different, like a police officer in London or someone who’s wealthy.”

Not only that, Lewis also spoke on how he finds it difficult to rewatch the movies.

He went on to say, “At times it’s painful how much of me there is in Neville. When I’m watching, I’m like, ‘That’s not Neville; that’s you.’”

Despite Lewis certainly feeling some type of way when it comes to the Harry Potter era of his life, he’s actually not mad about that being his identifier for the rest of his life.

Lewis told The Times that he’d actually be okay with that.

“If there’s something people remember you by, there are worse things than the Harry Potter franchise, it opened so many doors for me when I otherwise wouldn’t even have gotten in the room.”
