Things are very different across the ditch in green, mountainous NZ.
The country has a very cool Prime Minister who takes her baby into UN Meetings, Rugby, Netball and Cricket teams that punch way above their weight…and they have atrocious taste in coffee.
We say this, because McCafe has won a tight race to take out the September edition of the Roy Morgan New Zealand Coffee Shop of the Month.
Yep- a good ol’ flatty with 3 sugars at a Christchurch drive through is what gets the day-to-day Kiwi up and running.
The award recognizes the cafe that has the highest proportion of customers registering a ‘very’ or ‘fairly’ satisfied rating with their store experience.
A Kiwi at Maccas on any given morning
It’s a huge win for McCafe, with the Maccas brews going from a 77.1% rating to 86.9% mark in the past 12 months. See below for all the latest on Kiwi coffee facts.
Total satisfaction ratings of NZ coffee chains
“Coffee and donut chains have become a part of nearly everyone’s lives over the past two decades, but there is not a lot to stop customers switching when the in-store experience is sub-standard” said Michael Levine, CEO of Roy Morgan.
“When you add to that the consumers’ changing tastes – no-one imagined a few years ago that we’d be sipping salted-caramel lattes – there’s a lot each coffee shop branch or franchise needs to get right in order to keep the customer coming back.”

It seems that when it comes to specialty coffee the bearded, single O filter sipping baristas of Aus have yet to make their mark in NZ- but things can change dramatically.
“Coffee shops have to be local to the customers that use them, which is why it’s so important to know who’s in the vicinity of each store and at what times,” said Mr Levine, giving a handy tip to any prospective start up espresso bars.
With Starbucks also registering a whopping 85%, maybe we can learn a bit from our neighbors when it comes to keeping things simple.
Now if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for me to get my Costa Rican origin, geisha blend espresso- and listen to Scott Morrison’s playlist that is nowhere near as good as Jacinda’s.
