Peri-peri purveyors Nando’s are donating $500,000 to Foodbank in order to feed Australians in need. The restaurant chain has already raised more than half of its target since announcing the initiative in mid-May.

The company’s half-million dollar donation will add up to twice the number of meals. As stated on the Foodbank website, “every $1 you donate will provide 2 meals to someone in need.” Nando’s aren’t making a straight donation, however – rather, they’re giving Foodbank 50c from every transaction over $15 until they’ve reached the target.

To break it down a bit further, they’re looking to process one million transactions of $15 or over between May 18th and August 31st, 2020. The good news is they’re on track to get there well before the end of August. As of Monday, June 15th Nando’s had raised $309,006, which adds up to 618,012 meals.

Foodbank is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support for Australians experiencing food insecurity. Last year’s Foodbank Hunger Report revealed that one in five people have experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months. This number is set to rise given the increased insecurity brought about by COVID-19 and Australia’s prevailing economic recession.

“The support from brands such as Nando’s is vital in ensuring we can continue keeping up with the increased demand the pandemic has caused for vulnerable people requiring essential food relief,” said Foodbank CEO Brianna Casey.

“What we love about this initiative is that you don’t have to do anything different to donate – Aussies can just keep enjoying their favourite Nando’s lunch, dinner or snack while also helping vulnerable Australians.”

All you need to do is spend $15 at Nando’s and they’ll direct another 50c to Foodbank. They’ve offered a few suggestions for how to bump your order up to the $15 target. For example, the “better for you” options include a superfuel salad with chicken tenders or a haloumi wrap with a side salad. On the other side of the coin are the “treat yourself” options like the supremo burger with large peri-peri chips or a veggie wrap with a large garlic bread.

“Our customers have really come to the table by ordering their favourite dishes and we hope this momentum continues throughout the winter months,” said Nando’s Community Partnerships and Marketing Director, Helen Reece. “It’s incredible to see how keen people are to get behind purpose led brands and give generously to causes they care about.”
