After keeping quiet for a few years, Bioware have dusted off their Mass Effect franchise with the announcement of a new game and a remaster of the original trilogy of games.

So it’s been a pretty underwhelming few years for Bioware, the developers best known for the Mass Effect series. After underwhelming fans with the subpar Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017, the studio then released the even more disappointing Anthem in 2019.

But after laying low for a bit, it seems like Bioware are ready to recapture their former glory by going down the “remaster our old hits” route.

In a new blog post for “N7 Day 2020,” Bioware announced that a remastered version of the original Mass Effect trilogy will be coming out in 2021 for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC, as well as forward compatibility with the Xbox Series X and PS5.

Titled the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, this remaster will include single-player content and DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, as well as all the promo weapons, armours and content packs that were released over the years.

But perhaps the most interesting bit of this announcement was a tiny little tidbit about how Bioware are working on a new Mass Effect game.

Apparently a “veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe” but said nothing more as the project is still in its “early stages.”

How intriguing.

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition isn’t too surprising as it was almost a given that the OG trilogy was going to be remastered and re-released at some point.

But a new Mass Effect game? This could be big. Or the opposite of big.

On one hand, Bioware could manage to recapture the magic and deliver another grand experience that’s on par with the original Mass Effect trilogy.

But on the other hand, it could end up being Mass Effect: Andromeda all over again.

It’s too early to tell what will happen but there’s no doubt that it’s an exciting time to be a Mass Effect fan again.
