Something strange has been noticed on the PS5 store: PS3 games that weren’t there before are now listed but they can’t actually be bought.

Video Games Chronicle spotted their inclusion over the weekend. If you used to view a PS3 game on the PS5 store, you’d be pointed in the direction of the PS Now version of the game.

Not anymore. Such games are now listing their own purchase prices, including titles like Dead or Alive 5 and Prince of Persia. Some of these games don’t even appear on PS Now in some revisions where they are appearing.

Several suggestions have been made for the PS3 games being listed. Last month, Bloomberg reported that a huge relaunch of PS Plus was being planned, merging it with Now. It contained three different tiers: exiting PS Plus benefits, a large catalogue of games like Game Pass, and extended demos, game streaming and classic PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games.

That could mean the new appearance of the PS3 games is linked to Tier 3, as Sony aims to compete with Game Pass. If that’s the case, we could expect more and more PS3 games to appear on the PS5 store.

The PS3 games not actually being purchasable would point to it being due to a bug or error though. Some are even claiming the bug is directly related to PS Now. Others, meanwhile, have linked the listings to a patent filed by Mark Cerny regarding backward compatibility, and that PS5 may be planning to expand its PS3 titles as a result of that.

It remains to be seen how long these PS3 games will be listed, but it seems like players are discovering new titles in the PS5 store as it stands. Is it an exciting sign of a large-scale expansion or a simple bug? Only time will tell. This is a developing story so stay tuned for future updates.
