As good as the PS5 is, Sony’s new chonk of a console has a few drawbacks besides its size – like how you can’t back up your saves to a USB.
Now that the PS5 is out in the world, gamers are frothing at the prospect of getting their next-gen gaming on. Based on our own experience with Sony’s new chonk of a console, it’s pretty damn good on all fronts.
However, it seems like things were a little too good to be true when it comes to the PS5, specifically with game saves.
You see, the PS4 had allowed users to copy all their saved game data and files onto a USB so they had a copy of everything should their console suddenly cark it.
But for the new PS5, this ability to back up all those saves and data is no longer present.
Based on user experiences and reporting from the likes of IGN, there are now two options for your save data on the PS5:
- Delete it all off your console’s storage
- Upload it to cloud saves as backup.
Now option one isn’t ideal for those who want to keep a record of their data.

Option two on the other hand is pretty good as cloud storage is great and you won’t have to worry about losing the USB where you stored all your PS5 data on.
However there’s a catch for this cloud storage option for PS5 users: it’s only available for PS Plus subscribers.
So in other words, you have to be a paying PS Plus subscriber in order to back up your PS5 saves or risk losing everything if your new console dies at some point.
That’s a bit of a worry.
Now this is early days yet and Sony could well implement the USB saves option at some point in the future.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens on this front but from the outside looking in, it seems like Sony saw Nintendo’s odd and annoying way of backing up save data on the Switch and decided to copy it because they thought it was a good idea (even though what they already had was actually better).
