As we all know by now, isolation leads to experimenting with different foods. Now, one McDonald’s fan has been much more successful than most of us by coming up with a supersized version of the classic sausage and egg McMuffin.

UK Social influencer Amira Arateh, who is also a food writer, decided to recreate the classic McMuffin, but with a twist. After working out how to replicate the classic McMuffin sausage patty, she decided to tweak the ingredients a little.

She also shared the recipe with Metro, explaining she’s a big fan of Maccas and has been missing the Breakfast menu big time. So you can bet she’s looking forward to more McDonald’s opening around Britain (after the restaurant chain recently closed completely amid the coronavirus pandemic).

“People always say ‘Oh I only eat McDonald’s when I’m drunk/sad/super hungry,” she explained. “I am so completely unashamed to say I’m a fan and it hurts that they’re coming back without breakfast later this month.”

So what’s the recipe you ask? It’s really pretty simple. You’ll need:

  • Sausages or sausage meat
  • Onion
  • Sage
  • English muffins (duh)
  • American Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Olive oil
  • Hash browns

That’s right, hash browns! A bold move but I wholeheartedly approve. If for no other reason than it’s a known fact that hangovers are cured by that brown potato goodness. Hey, that’s just good science.

So, on to the method:

First up you’ll need to “remove the sausage meat from its casing,” says Arateh. “Then chop the sage and onion and mix with the sausage meat, before rolling this into small balls.”

Next, flatten the meatballs into patties, and pan-fry those babies. While those are cooking, get those hash browns going.

“After that, fry the eggs,” says Arateh. “If you want a McDonald’s-style fried egg, you need a circular cooking mould. ‘I didn’t have any because that’s far too advanced and professional, but you can make one out of tin foil. Roll out the tin foil and make sure you rip off enough to cover the diameter of one of your English muffins.”

Next, you’ll want to fold it over five times until it is thin and stuff, then join the ends together by folding it over… “but making sure there’s no gap” because the egg will escape.

Then, “Crack the egg directly in the pan and in the makeshift mould to keep it circular and as neat as possible,” she explains, before giving the sausage patties one final fry.

“Finally, assemble! Muffin. American cheese. Sausage patty. Hash brown. Muffin. ‘No butter needed really as the juices from the patty are good enough.”

Hooley Dooley. You can bet your bottom dollar recreating this will be my weekend mission.
