Last month, Rolling Stone tackled counting down the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time, but they left it to the court of public opinion.
11,000 Rolling Stone Australia had their say as to what they believe the greatest film ever released is. The results are contentious, to say the least. Amid the countdown stalwarts were classics like, Gone With The Wind, Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump. And, regretably, a number of Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks.
The entry that stuck out like a sore thumb, and one that I support wholeheartedly, is 2003’s feel-good Christmas romp, Love Actually, which placed at number 13. This can only be described as a win for the cinematic community. It is high time that it is preserved in the National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Love Actually beat out a number of “classics” like perennial list toppers like Citizen Kane and Casablanca. Two films that don’t feature Bill Nighy covering the Troggs 1964 anthem ‘Love Is All Around.’
Rolling Stone Australia collaborated with the Australian Home Entertainment Distributors Association (AHEDA) to promote the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time Poll.
The campaign encouraged readers to look back into their 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, or VHS collections, and cast their minds back to those seminal movie moments, and pick out some of the greatest films of all time.
“We were so thrilled to have over 11,000 readers vote in the 100 Greatest Movies of All Time Readers Poll as it’s so important for us to maintain a connection with our community during this time,” shares Rolling Stone Australia’s managing editor Poppy Reid. “The film industry as a whole has taken a massive hit, and our intention to highlight 100 global cinematic masterpieces has been made even more special thanks to the keen involvement of our readers.”
