Spider-Man: No Way Home has smashed expectations at the box office despite the global pandemic, earning a cushy $253mil domestically for its opening weekend.
After an opening day that was not only a pandemic-era best, but also second only to Avengers: Endgame, the third movie of the MCU Spider-Man had one of the biggest opening weekends in film history.
It also topped the box office worldwide, earning over $587mil globally.
This haul makes No Way Home the third biggest domestic opener ever, not adjusted for inflation. The top spot goes to Avengers: Endgame, which took $375mil, followed by Avengers: Infinity War, who only just beat NWH with $257.6mil.
For context with other pandemic-era box office grabs, the previous leader of the box office during the last two years was Venom: Let There Be Carnage, with $90mil. The new Spider-Man movie also easily bested the last few Marvel movies: Black Widow ($80mil), Shang-Chi ($75mil) and Eternals ($71mil).
Directed by Jon Watts, Spider-Man: No Way Home follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland), MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) as their lives fall into chaos as Parker’s identity as Spider-Man is revealed and a multiverse featuring familiar faces from alternate timelines is unleashed.
Following this star-studded cast is Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, and Benedict Wong as Wong. The film also features a number of returning baddies from previous Spider-Man adventures, such as Willem Defoe as the Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx as Electro, and Alfred Molina as Doc Ock.
