The first trailer for the hugely-anticipated How I Met Your Mother spinoff is finally here and there’s surprises galore in it.

Hilary Duff is reviving her career as the lead star in How I Met Your Father, Hulu’s attempt to revive the HIMYM brand and blow away the cobwebs of the OG series’ finale (I still shudder remembering how dirty they done the Mother).

Hulu dropped the first trailer for HIMYF on Thursday, December 16th, and there’s lots to intrigue. Kim Cattrall – with plenty of time since she’s not starring in the Sex and the City revival – portrays the future version of Duff’s character Sophie. “It was hard to live in the moment in 2022,” her voiceover says. “There was always someplace else you could be, someone else you could be with.”

We’re taken back to Sophie and her close group of friends trying to figure out who they are and find love in New York City. There’s a guy with a posh English accent. Josh from Drake & Josh turns up as one of Sophie’s potential paramours. Hilary Duff, Kim Cattrall, and Josh Peck in the same 2022 series? That’s a large dollop of early 00s nostalgia, Hulu. I see you.

The series seems to have wisely been updated for the modern audience. Sophie reveals in the trailer that she’s been on 87 failed Tinder dates – we’ve all been there. “My last date was the worst one yet,” she says before cutting to the scene of her date saying, “I just had another date there and I just had sex.” “He told you that?!” exclaims one of Sophie’s friends as she recounts the story.

“Screw being mature! We can still make bad choices for a few more years!” she later insists. That’s the stuff long-lasting sitcoms are made of. How I Met Your Father is set to premiere on Hulu on January 18th, 2022.
