PlayStation has unfortunately cancelled those limited edition McDonald’s controllers and this is why I have trust issues.

We shared with you yesterday the exciting news that Maccas and PlayStation were collaborating on controllers to celebrate the iconic fast food chain’s 50th anniversary in Australia. Maccas had also planned to work with Twitch streamers to give the controllers away to some lucky recipients this week.

It was kitsch and colourful and really stood out. The touchpad had the classic Maccas golden arches symbol, while the left handle had a pack of fries and the right handle had a burger. Truly delicious looking.

Now for the terrible update because the dream is dead. Press Start broke the awful news that the collaboration was off, sharing an official statement from Maccas: “Sony PlayStation has not authorised the use of its controller in promotional materials related to the proposed Stream Week event and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

What am I supposed to do now? Use my old standard white and black PS5 controller? How boring (there are some third-party wraps which allow users to change console colours though). I think it would be funny if Sony announced a collaboration with Hungry Jack’s now. Purely out of spite.

It’s not all bad though because Maccas are still pushing forward with their birthday celebrations. They’re offering 50th birthday hoodies and 50 channel subscriptions for Twitch streamers to hand out to viewer. It had intended to start the celebrations today, but postponed the week-long event.

It’s yet another setback for PS5 in Australia after annoying scalpers bought up all the new Big W stock of the prized console in the country earlier last week before true customers could get to them. A spokesperson stated that the issue was under control: “We can confirm an issue occurred on our website today caused by some unsuccessful attempts at placing fraudulent orders. The issue has now been fixed and we can ensure our loyal customers waiting to order PS5 consoles will not be impacted. Stay tuned on our website for future releases.”
