She may currently be going through a rocky time in her private life, but Abbie Chatfield’s career just keeps going from strength to strength.

It seems like 2Day FM views the hugely popular star as a worthy competitor for the dominating Kyle and Jackie O. As per the Herald Sun, Southern Cross Austereo, the parent company of 2Day FM, is eyeing Chatfield to take over a breakfast radio show in a couple of years in a bid to take down their powerhouse rivals.

“They’ll definitely make a play for Abbie in 2024,” a reportedly well-placed radio executive informed the publication. Chatfield was allegedly “in discussions” with the station for as soon as 2023, but the ideal on-air partner hasn’t been found yet.

“She certainly could be the wildcard that they desperately need, after a decade of dismal ratings at 2Day FM. Abbie Chatfield is the best card they can play,” the Herald Sun‘s source added.

Can Chatfield really be called a “wildcard” though? After her start in reality TV, she’s become one of the biggest celebrity names in Australia over the past year. Her podcast, It’s A Lot, is beloved by fans; she’s now a judge alongside Mel B and Hughesy on The Masked Singer; she’s still only 27-years-old and has her whole career ahead of her.

If 2Day FM is going for the polar opposite of Kyle and Jackie, in other words, the young and buzzy Chatfield could be the ideal candidate. It won’t be an easy task, with the two biggest names in Australian radio still at their peak (see their recent chat with rapper Yung Gravy as an example).

With the station struggling in its battle to curtail a decade-long ratings spiral, they desperately need new blood. Abbie Chatfield actually signed with the broadcaster back in January, but that was only to host an evening show. The bigger plan, clearly, is to give her the prime breakfast timeslot.
