Someone get Chris Evans a shield because word on the street is that he’ll be returning to the MCU in some capacity as Captain America.

After Chris Evans finished his tenure as Captain America on a high in Avengers Endgame, he made it very clear that his next step was to do literally anything that wasn’t associated with the MCU.

But after educating Americans about politics, making cable-knit sweaters popular again in Knives Out, and an accidental nude photo leak on Instagram, it seems like Evans is ready for an unexpected return to the MCU.

According to Deadline, the actor is in talks to dust off his Captain America suit and shield for another ride on the MCU train.

Apparently this deal (which may or may not have been signed according to Deadline sources) will involve Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers for at least one MCU film, with the possibility of a second film.

But don’t expect any of these films to be a new Captain America movie though as it is reported that Evans will be doing sort of what Robert Downey Jr. did in Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming, i.e. appearing in Marvel films in major supporting roles.

At the time of writing, Marvel has yet to comment on this news, which isn’t too surprising.

Either way, we shouldn’t expect Evans’ Captain America to return for a little while. Marvel are currently focused on Phase 4 of its MCU plans, which involves several films already in the works and a bunch of TV series on Disney+ starting with WandaVision.

And of course there’s the COVID-shaped elephant in the room that could potentially push things back even further, as it’s already done.

As for what Chris Evans has to say about this news, well he tweeted this:

Huh. Make of that what you will. Guess we’ll find out what exactly is going on soon enough.

But hey, it’ll be cool to see Steve Rogers again in the MCU in some capacity and it gives us the opportunity to say this: Somebody get this man a shield.
