Despite bugs and refunds, it’s been revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 has still managed to sell 13 million copies, a tremendous feat.

The most-anticipated video game of the year has dominated headlines for the whole of December. There wee good reviews for it upon release and we’ve been overwhelmed by one certain hilarious glitch in particular that will never leave our memory.

Others, however, haven’t been so enamoured with the game, with some choosing to get refunds. After the game was pulled from sale on the PlayStation store, CD Projekt Red told customers that they would be eligible for a refund from both physical and digital stores. If players were refused a refund by retailers they could also request one from CD Projekt Red itself up until December 21st.

This has mattered not for sales though: as per a Bloomberg report, CD Project Red have still managed to sell 13 million copies of their title by December 20th. This number also takes into account the number of refunds requested and still leaves several days before Christmas, making it all the more remarkable.

In a regulatory filing on December 22nd, the management board of CD Projekt SA chose to reveal these numbers due to their potential impact on ‘investment-related decisions’: “This figure represents the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms (factoring in returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts), i.e. the ‘sell-through’ figure, less all refund requests e-mailed directly to the company by the publication date of this report.”

It comes after CD Project Red also recently revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 had recouped its steep development costs through pre-orders alone, which reached 8 million copies, once again highlighting the huge appetite that existed for the game.

To give you an idea of how good those numbers are, according to Kotaku it took 6 weeks for The Witcher 3 to sell 6 million copies. Cyberpunk 2077 doubled that in just 10 days, which really says it all.

With patches promised by CD Project Red for early 2021, it will be fascinating to see how much further sales of the game will progress in the new year.
