The Mad Max Furiosa spinoff movie has officially been given a release date and it’s a mere two and a half years away.
According to Variety, Warner Bros. has announced the official release date for the Furiosa spinoff as June 23rd, 2023.
It will serve as a prequel to the masterful epic Mad Max: Fury Road, which came out in 2015. Thankfully George Miller is returning to direct, co-write, and produce the project alongside Doug Mitchell.
We don’t have an exact premise yet, but it will explore the backstory of Furiosa before she met and helped out Max in the desert. Judging solely on the cast alone though, it should be another excellent entry in the Mad Max series.
The young Furiosa will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, one of the brightest acting talents of the last few years. After her breakout performance in 2015’s art horror The Witch, 2020 has been her biggest year to date: her lead role in the Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit has received critical acclaim and the show has become Netflix’s biggest scripted limited series ever.
Taylor-Joy will be joined by Chris Hemsworth (a nice casting choice for one of Australia’s greatest cultural exports) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who won an Emmy for his performance as Cal Abar in HBO’s 2018 limited series Watchmen.
Miller actually had an early draft for a Furiosa prequel prepared before Fury Road even started filming, so it’s been a long time coming. He wrote it as a way to assist Charlize Theron, who portrayed Furiosa in Fury Road, in preparing for the role. As it stands, Theron isn’t expected to be involved with the prequel.
It’s also unclear what role, big or small, Max will play in the spinoff, but it’s unlikely that Tom Hardy would make an appearance as the character, given that Max will be much younger in the story.
