From Sunday June 14 – Saturday June 20, Sydney will hostan exciting lineup of events and activities to celebrate the asylum seekers and refugees who now call Australia home.

OnFriday June 19, Redfern Community Centre will be hosting a night of free film screenings to mark Sydney’s ten-year anniversrysince declaring itself a Refugee Welcome Zone.

The 2014 filmThe Good Lie,starring Academy Award-winning actor Reese Witherspoon, explores the story of four Sudanese refugees who win a lottery to live in the US. BeforeThe Good Lie, there will also be a screening of Iranian human rights advocate Saba Vasefi’s short film,Symphony Of Strange Waters, about a child refugee arriving in Australia.

If you prefer live action over the screen, make sure you visit theAsylum Seekers Centre’sDifferent Pasts, Shared Future onThursday June 18.Singer-songwriter Miriam Lieberman will perform live, and a great lineup of speakers, includingAsylum seeker Gerald Magala Mukiibi and refugee Prosper Gateretse, will share their stories.
