You wouldn’t think that something as adorable as Baby Yoda could piss people off, but it turns out the impossible is possible after all.

When Baby Yoda was first introduced to the world in season one of The Mandalorian, the internet immediately fell in love and embraced the cute little (fictional) creature as something to be treasured until the end of time (or until the show ends).

But two episodes into season two of the hit Star Wars spin-off show, the tide has dramatically turned as folks are now inexplicably pissed at little Baby Yoda for being an insensitive little shit.

Okay, let’s explain how this all came to be. Just a warning, there will be SPOILERS AHEAD for The Mandalorian season two episode ‘The Passenger’.

So ‘The Passenger’ refers to a new character named Frog Lady (imaginative, I know), who asks for Mando’s help to safely transport her and her container of unfertilised eggs, which need to be fertilised by her husband (Frog Gentleman or something I’m guessing).

Just to emphasise how important this task is, Frog Lady has to do this before equinox, her species is facing extinction, and this is the last time she can make these eggs. So yeah, no pressure.

Anyway, so during a moment of grown-up chat between Frog Lady and Mando, Baby Yoda snuck in and ate a bunch of these unfertilised eggs. Not exactly the ideal thing to happen for a species that’s on the brink of extinction.

Now this isn’t that surprising as it’s been established that the little Force guru is a fan of munching on things. What is surprising was how fans reacted to this darkly comic scene because you would’ve thought he committed genocide or something akin to a war crime based on the backlash.

To quote one complaint from a horrified fan (via Entertainment Weekly): “I’m a mom. It’s not funny at all to hear mama frog lady go into great detail about how important and beloved her eggs are to her and have to watch them get eaten on three separate occasions for shits and giggles.”

In fact, the backlash got so intense over Baby Yoda’s seemingly insensitive act that Lucasfilm’s creative art manager went on Twitter to defend what went down with the egg eating thing.

Is this all an overreaction to something meant for comedic effect? Yeah a bit, let’s be honest.

Was Baby Yoda’s behaviour evidence that The Mandalorian creators are condoning this sort of behaviour? Oh god no. Folks seem to forget that this is all fictional.

Will this have any lasting effect on people’s love of Baby Yoda? Almost certainly not given the internet’s short attention span. The Child will do something cute in a future episode, folks will immediately forget all about the frog egg eating incident, and the gushing will re-commence once again.
