The Fredo Frog is one of the most iconic Australian food images – but don’t expect to see the classic green mascot donning the sugary treat over the next month.

The frog will be replaced with images of real-life frogs that are endangered, in order to educate Australians on the plight of the animals, Australian Food News reports.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Australia has a number of frog species on the brink of extinction, with the recent bushfires expected to see that number increase sharply over the coming months.

In addition to the re-packaging, Cadbury has announced a 3-year, $600,000 commitment to support Zoos Victoria, and Conservation Volunteers Australia in the wake of the wildlife crisis.

“The commitment from CADBURY will empower Zoos Victoria to implement programs aimed at immediate recovery efforts in bushfire affected areas and assess the genetic structure of the captive populations to ensure current and future breeding programs are optimized,” said Zoos Victoria Threatened Species Biologist, Deon Gilbert.

“We will also aim to research the possibility of thermal adaptation to warmer sites as a response to habitat degradation, current climate and disease factors that have contributed to the species’ decline.”
